This is my favorite novel so far this year, and I don’t say that lightly. I absolutely adored this mystical story of the Lady of Shalott and the legend of King Arthur. I’m no expert on the legend, so this was a bit of an education for me. Elaine of Shallot was Arthur’s oracle, cursed to see the future, and in the original legend, Morgana is a bitter sorceress who turns against the king, and of course Guinevere betrays Arthur with his previously loyal knight, Lancelot. The title, Half Sick of Shadows, is taken from a painting of the Lady of Shallot by John William Waterhouse, depicting the lines from a Tennyson poem. In the tale, she is confined to her tower, doomed to weave tapestry and view the outside world only through reflections in her mirror.That’s just a little misogynistic, don’t you think? This author sure did. Why is his magical sister portrayed as an evil sorceress? Why is Guinevere portrayed as an adulteress? And why is Elaine cursed and portrayed as a madwoman? Why is everything about Arthur?This is Elaine’s story – and she has the power get it right. It’s the story of five true friends who may be destined to destroy each other. Their love and loyalty runs deep, and so they fear what the future may bring and who they may become. I really think you’ll love this new adult, fantasy re-telling that reshapes the Arthurian legend and, in many ways, shatters the medieval “glass ceiling.” We get it already! The author likes grey! There's no need to remind us Every Paragraph. Tbh, I expected this to be a MoA fanfic but it had some solid, original ideas. I understand it's fiction but the timeline is typically medieval (unless the author was deliberately taking liberties) so there's plenty of inconsistencies there, but if you can suspend your disbelief and deal w repetitive descriptions of "grey", it's not a bad read at all.
